Roseville nursing aide who stole from elderly men sentenced to 200 days in jail
A former nursing assistant at Sutter Roseville Medical Center was sentenced Monday to 200 days in jail and two years’ probation for stealing credit cards and cash from elderly patients, California Attorney General Rob Bonta announced.
Shekira Thompson pleaded guilty in Placer Superior Court to identity theft as well as felony and misdemeanor charges of theft from an elder or dependent adult, Bonta said in a news release Monday.
She used the cards and cash to run up more than $2,000 in charges at a wig store, a nail salon and a shopping mall, the news release said.
“We are committed to fighting against all types of elder abuse and neglect,” Bonta said in the statement. “We will take prompt action to ensure that anyone who exploits or harms these vulnerable members of our community is held accountable.”
A criminal complaint filed in May 2024 alleged that Thompson stole from three elderly men in 2022. The men were identified as a 76-year-old, an 83-year-old and a 96-year-old.
The victims were particularly vulnerable because they were dependent on others to assist them, the complaint said. Thompson took advantage of a position of trust and confidence to commit the crimes, actions that amounted to aggravating circumstances, prosecutors said in the complaint.
In addition to pleading guilty on all counts, Thompson also admitted to the aggravating circumstances, Bonta’s office said. In addition to jail time and probation, she was ordered to pay restitution and barred from working in an elder or dependent care facility.
In recent years, and in addition to another case at Sutter Roseville, there have been allegations and charges of elder abuse at several Sacramento area facilities, including Eskaton and Brookdale’s Folsom facility.
