Person dies after lying down on light rail tracks, Sacramento police say

A person died Wednesday evening after they were struck by a Sacramento Regional Transit light rail train in a suspected suicide at a station near midtown, authorities said.

The incident was reported about 5:45 p.m. Wednesday as a light rail train striking a pedestrian in the 2900 block of R Street, said Officer Anthony Gamble, a spokesperson for the Sacramento Police Department.

In an update shortly before 8:30 p.m., Gamble said it appears the person intentionally laid down between between two train cars shortly before the train left the station.

Officers arrived at the scene near the Capital City Freeway overpass and learned the pedestrian was dead. Gamble said the officers were still investigating and did not have any further details about the pedestrian to release.

The fatality occurred at the 29th Street RT light rail station. Devra Selenis, an RT spokesperson, said Sacramento police were investigating the incident and that RT officials were fully cooperating with authorities.

RT light rail service on the Gold and Blue lines were impacted by the incident.

Selenis said an RT shuttle bus was in place for light rail passengers on the Blue Line between Broadway and Cathedral Square at 10th and K streets and 11th and K streets.

A shuttle bus was in place on the Gold Line for light rail passengers between Sacramento Valley and Power Inn RT stations. Selenis urged RT riders to check the Alert SacRT app for service updates.
