  • Coast Guard suspended search; county dive teams continue Monday recovery effort.

Authorities on Monday announced they have recovered one of the boaters who went missing following a fatal capsizing on Lake Tahoe during Saturday’s storm. One person remains missing, according to the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office.

The body was recovered from the waters off D.L. Bliss State Park on Sunday evening, the Sheriff’s Office announced in a news release. Including the person found dead Sunday, the total number of people confirmed dead from the boat is seven.

Two survivors were taken to the hospital Saturday, according to the U.S. Coast Guard. Their conditions have not been updated by authorities.

The recovery of the body late Sunday came hours after the Coast Guard had suspended its search for the two unaccounted for boaters.

“Suspending a search is always a difficult decision to make and weighs heavily on each Coast Guard member involved,” Cmdr. David Herndon, search and rescue mission coordinator for the Coast Guard, said in a Sunday statement, which indicated that the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office had aided in responding to the incident.

The extent of the coordination between the county and the Coast Guard was not clear.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, the search team that recovered the body planned to continue looking for the remaining boater Monday. That team of divers includes personnel from El Dorado and San Joaquin counties, as well as Washoe County in Nevada.

The news release did not detail where or how the body was found Sunday evening.

It said the names of the people who died in the capsizing incident would not be released “until proper notifications have been made,” the Sheriff’s Office said.

The boat capsized amid harsh weather conditions at about 3 p.m. Saturday near D.L. Bliss State Park. Water swells as tall as 8 feet were reported as wind speeds over the lake reached 30 knots.
