CHP officers busy on Sacramento roadways during July Fourth enforcement crackdown
Officers from the California Highway Patrol’s South Sacramento office made two-dozen DUI arrests and handed out more than 600 citations during a busy July Fourth weekend, according to the CHP.
The south Sacramento numbers were part of the more than 34,500 citations issued by the CHP statewide during the patrol’s Independence Day weekend enforcement crackdown.
The patrol’s statewide Holiday Enforcement Period, which ended Sunday, was “aimed at stopping dangerous driving behaviors and keeping California roads safe,” said CHP officials.
The South Sacramento office, which patrols the Highway 99 and Interstate 5 corridors south of the American River, arrested 24 drivers on suspicion of driving under the influence during the three-day enforcement period. Patrol officers wrote 610 tickets. More than half of those — 367 — were for speeding. Ten of those were to drivers who exceeded 100 mph, the patrol said.
Officers also seized an illegal firearm during one of the traffic stops, the CHP said.
Statewide, California Highway Patrol officers issued 34,548 citations and took 1,311 suspected DUI drivers off the state’s roadways. Officers also handed out 21,328 speeding citations statewide during the holiday enforcement period.
The CHP made more than 1,600 arrests statewide during the same enforcement period in 2024, including more than 1,300 motorists for driving under the influence. More than 1,700 were arrested for speeding. Patrol officers cited more than 30,000 motorists during last year’s July Fourth holiday period.
“CHP officers were out in full force across the state, targeting impaired, distracted, and aggressive driving,” CHP officials said this week in a statement announcing the results of the enforcement effort. “Every citation and arrest represents a dangerous behavior that could have resulted in tragedy.”
