A toddler died Saturday after she was struck by a pickup at a rural home in El Dorado County, the California Highway Patrol reported.

The incident was reported about 2:45 p.m. Saturday as a vehicle crash involving a child at the home along Jacobus Drive in the community of Garden Valley, several miles north of Placerville.

CHP officers, firefighters from local fire departments and El Dorado County sheriff’s deputies responded to the reported crash.

Officers arrived and learned that crash involved a Ford F-150 pickup and a child pedestrian, according to a news release from the CHP Placerville area office. Authorities at the scene attempted life-saving efforts, but the child died from her injuries.

Officer Andrew Brown, a CHP spokesman, told the Mountain Democrat that the 2-year-old girl was struck by a vehicle driven by a relative.

Investigators had ruled out alcohol or drugs as a factor in the fatality, the CHP said in the news release. The incident remained under investigation.

“This is a heartbreaking loss for the family and the community,” the CHP said in the news release. “The death of a child affects all of us, and our thoughts are with those who are grieving during this incredibly difficult time.”
