The two people killed in a hit-and-run crash Saturday night in West Sacramento were a pair of 17-year-old girls, the Yolo County Sheriff’s Office’s coroner division confirmed Tuesday.

Layla Clemons and Jaea Chatman were struck around 9 p.m. Saturday on Jefferson Boulevard near Bevan Road and pronounced dead on the scene, according to the West Sacramento Police Department. The department has not detailed the circumstances surrounding the collision, but Clemons’ mother told KCRA that the girls were biking at the time.

The family of Layla Chrissa Clemons mourned her on a GoFundMe fundraising page as an aspiring nurse who “brought light, laughter and love into every space she entered.”

Chatman was Clemons’ girlfriend, the page says.

“Her potential was boundless, and her absence leaves a void we will never be able to fill,” Clemons’ family wrote.

The police on Sunday arrested a 71-year-old man from Fair Oaks in connection with the crash. He is being held at the Monroe Detention Center in Woodland and is set to be arraigned Wednesday, said Wendy Wilcox, a spokesperson for the Yolo County District Attorney’s Office.
