An Elk Grove high school student tested positive for active tuberculosis, according to a Thursday news release from Sacramento County health officials and Elk Grove Unified School District.

The student attends Monterey Trail High School and is now isolated at home, expected to make a full recovery, the release said.

The exposure happened between April 11 and July 17, the release said. The district is working to send letters to people who may have had close contact with the student. The county recommends those people receive a test, which will be provided on-site at the Monterey Trail campus.

County health and school district officials reported the positive test Thursday, the first day of the academic year for Monterey Trail High School.

Tuberculosis can spread by bacteria in the air, the release said. Symptoms can include a persistent cough, fever, night sweats and unexplained weight loss.

In Sacramento County, 110 active tuberculosis cases were reported in 2024, which is 6.9 cases per 100,000 county residents, the release said.
