Mom’s quick action, smoke alarm saves family from fast moving Sacramento fire
Sacramento Metro firefighters are praising a mother’s quick action to save her family from the fire that raced through their south Sacramento home early Tuesday.
“It was through her swift actions that she was able to get her family out,” said Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District Capt. Mark Nunez.
The mother and family members were jarred from their sleep about 5:05 a.m. Tuesday by a loud, booming sound followed by the sound of breaking glass, Nunez said.
Outside, firefighters arrived to find the garage of the home in the 8500 block of Fairlawn Court in Florin fully involved with flames that had begun to spread into the entry way and living room of the home.
“She woke up and heard what she said was a ‘boom’ sound,” Nunez said. “She walked down the hallway and heard window panes cracking and flames pushing through the front door. She was quickly able to wake her family and help get them all out of the home,” Nunez said.
The family of six — mother, father and their four children — escaped safely, though the family was displaced by the fire. One person who received a minor foot injury as they fled through a window was taken to a hospital as a precautionary measure.
Nunez said firefighters contended with “significant challenges” navigating a large amount of contents inside the home and garage, but were able to bring the fire under control.
Along with the mother’s fast thinking, Nunez said a working smoke alarm in the home that activated after the fire spread also helped the family to safety.
Metro Fire is investigating the cause of the blaze.
