Jewelry store chain is closing 3 Sacramento-area locations. Find out where
Struggling jewelry store chain Claire’s is closing hundreds of stores after filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy for the second time.
That includes three stores in the Sacramento area.
“Increased competition, consumer spending trends and the ongoing shift away from brick-and-mortar retail, in combination with our current debt obligations and macroeconomic factors, necessitate this course of action for Claire’s and its stakeholders,” CEO Chris Cramer said in a statement.
Here’s what to know:
What is Claire’s?
An American mall staple since the 1970s, Claire’s describes itself as a “global brand powerhouse for self-expression, creating exclusive, curated and fun fashionable jewelry and accessories” for girls and young woman.
It also offers “world-leading piercing services,” Claire’s said on its corporate website.
The Illinois-headquartered company operates under two brand names: Claire’s and Icing.
Claire’s has more than 2,750 stores worldwide with stores in 17 countries including Ireland and Canada.
Claire’s, which peaked in popularity in the early 2000s, filed for bankruptcy in 2018 and again in August, NPR reported.
On Aug. 20, Claire’s entered into an agreement with private holding company Ames Watson to purchase Claire’s business operations in North America, the company said in a news release.
“As we continue through our restructuring proceedings, our team has worked tirelessly to explore every option for preserving the value of the Claire’s business and brand,” Cramer said in the release.
“We are pleased to have the opportunity to partner with Claire’s and support the next chapter for this iconic brand,” Lawrence Berger, co-founder of Ames Watson, said in the release. “Claire’s has built a powerful emotional connection with generations of consumers through its focus on self-expression, creativity, and accessible fashion.”
