Fire crews quash North Sacramento railcar blaze that triggered power outage
Firefighters are mopping up Monday after an early morning fire engulfed a railcar on Roseville Road in North Sacramento before spreading to a towing yard and knocking out power to nearby customers.
No one was hurt, Sacramento Fire Department officials said.
City fire crews were called to the 2:08 a.m. blaze in the 3900 block of Roseville Road, a largely industrial area just north of Interstate 80 near Del Paso Park, said Sacramento Fire Department officials.
Ten engines were among the crews that swarmed the fire as firefighters worked to stop its spread. Flames spread to nearby grass before making their way into a towing yard, where it burned six cars and a trailer that carried batteries, said Sacramento Fire Capt. Justin Sylvia, a department spokesperson.
Sylvia said hazardous materials crews have since completed their work.
The fire also burned through Sacramento Municipal Utility District power lines knocking out power to more than 1,800 customers about 3 a.m. SMUD crews have largely restored electric service. Only five customers were without power by 7:45 a.m., according to a SMUD outage map.
