Pedestrian killed in early morning collision on Highway 99 in south Sacramento

Pedestrian fatality

A pedestrian was struck and killed by a passing car on Highway 99 early Friday morning after reportedly stepping into the roadway.

Dispatchers aired calls of a person down in the northbound lanes of Highway 99 south of Mack Road just after 1 a.m. Friday, California Highway Patrol officials in the South Sacramento office said in a statement.

CHP officials said the pedestrian was walking west into the northbound lanes before stepping into the path of a Honda Accord sedan. The car’s driver pulled to the shoulder and waited for emergency responders who declared the pedestrian dead.

The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office will identify the pedestrian after notifying next of kin.

The driver provided a statement to CHP officers, and neither drugs nor alcohol were suspected factors in the collision. Northbound Highway 99 was closed for two hours at the collision site for investigators before reopening after 3 a.m. Friday.

The crash remains under investigation.
