College sports, live shows and winter wonderlands up ahead for the weekend

Weekend guide: Things to do

This weekend has a variety of events to attend and things to do in Sacramento and surrounding areas including college sports, art shows, outdoor winter activities and music concerts with living legends.

According to the National Weather Service office in Sacramento, Friday through Sunday will feature clear to partly cloudy skies with no rain expected. High temperatures will reach the upper 50s to low 60s, while nighttime lows will fall to the mid-40s.

This weekend’s calendar includes family-friendly options as well as 21+ events throughout Sacramento and Northern California. Attendees should check individual event details for age requirements or ticket policies.

Moana Live-to-Film Concert

The Mondavi Center on the campus of UC Davis, 1 Shields Ave., is hosting a Moana Live-to-Film concert 7:30 p.m. Friday.

Enjoy a full-length screening of Disney’s Moana featuring some of your favorite Disney tracks “How Far I’ll Go” and “You’re Welcome”.

Tickets start at $42 for adults, $21 for children under 18 and $18 for UC Davis students. A $3.50 processing will be applied to purchases.

The Beach Boys at The Venue

Classic American rock band the Beach Boys will perform at The Venue at Thunder Valley Casino Resort, 1200 Athens Ave., in Lincoln starting at 7:30 p.m. Friday. Beach Boys original singer and songwriter Mike Love will perform the group’s greatest hits.

The Beach Boys, who first formed in 1961, are known for countless songs including “Be True to Your School”, “Fun, Fun, Fun”, “I Get Around”, “Help Me, Rhonda”, “California Girls”, “Good Vibrations” and “Kokomo”.

Alongside Love will be special guests Herman’s Hermits starring Peter Noone. Tickets start at $64.

Heart at Hard Rock Live

American rock band Heart makes their return to the Sacramento region with a concert at Hard Rock Live, 3317 Forty Mile Road, inside Hard Rock Hotel and Casino Sacramento in Wheatland starting at 8 p.m. Friday.

Heart recently performed at Golden 1 Center earlier this year in March. The band broke on to the rock music scene in 1973. A decade ago the group solidified their greatness with an induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Some of their beloved songs include “Alone”, “Barracuda” and “These Dreams”. Tickets start at $94.

Sacramento State Athletics

The Hornets are buzzing all throughout Northern California this weekend, whether a student, alumni or fan of the local university, here’s where you can support their athletic programs.

The Mike Bibby-coached men’s basketball team will drive west on Interstate 80 to face University of California at Haas Pavilion in Berkeley at 7 p.m. Friday. Tickets start at $19.

Both schools feature the sons of NBA Hall of Fame legends with Hornets forward Shaqir O’Neal, son of Shaquille O’Neal, best known as Shaq, Los Angeles Lakers legend now Sacramento State general manager and California guard Justin Pippen, son of Chicago Bulls legend and six-time champion Scottie Pippen. Former NBA All-Star and New York basketball legend Stephon Marbury’s son made the team as a walk-on.

The Aaron Kallhoff-led women’s basketball team returns from a three-game road trip with a home game against CSU Fullerton inside the Hornet Pavilion at 6:30 p.m. Friday. Tickets start at $15 for adults, $10 for children 3 to 12.

The ladies are coming off of back-to-back wins against UC San Diego, 71-60, and Long Beach State, 57-54. The team’s leading scorers are guards Natalie Picton and Rubi Gray with 13 and 11.2 points per game, respectively. Benthe Versteeg chips in with a consistent 10.4 points and five rebounds per game.

Hornet football is coming off of a thrilling, ‘cardiac-arrest’ victory, 23-20, against Idaho behind Sacramento State quarterback Cardell Williams’ game-winning drive that included two big time throws to Jordan Williams and his own rush touchdown to seal the deal. The win

The regular season concludes a big rivalry versus UC Davis in the Causeway Classic begins at 1 p.m. Saturday. The game could decide the Hornets’ FCS playoff hopes. Tickets start at $31 for children ages 3 to 13 and $44 for adults.

John Legend at The Venue

Legendary R&B singer and songwriter John Legend is in concert performing at The Venue at Thunder Valley Casino, 1200 Athens Ave., in Lincoln at 8 p.m. Saturday.

Legend is celebrating the 20th anniversary of his debut album Get Lifted which included hits like “Ordinary People”, “Used to Love U”, “So High” and “Number One” featuring Kanye West.

The critically acclaimed album was named Best R&B Album at the 48th Annual Grammy Awards. The album earned Legend another two awards, Best New Artist and Best Male R&B Vocal Performance for his single “Ordinary People”.

Tickets start at $129.

Other weekend events, activities to consider:

Imaginarium Festival, California’s largest light show featuring over 15 million LEDs, opens Friday at Cal Expo, 1600 Exposition Blvd. Tickets are now on sale. General admission for children ages 3 to 12 and seniors starts at $16. Admission for ages 13 and older is $21. Military admission with a valid ID is $18. A $3 service fee applies per ticket. Hours of operation are 5 to 10 p.m. on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Sundays, and extended to 11 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.

Ski and mountain resorts have opened for the 2025-26 winter season throughout the Sierras and Tahoe area. Resorts opening Friday include Boreal Mountain Resort, Heavenly Ski Resort, Northstar California Resort and Sugar Bowl Resort. The Bear Valley Mountain Resort opens Saturday, or Nov. 28 depending on the weather. Uber recently announced a partnership with Vail Resort offering rides to resorts, on the list is Heavenly and Northstar.

Nancy Lee performs at Laughs Unlimited, 1207 Front St., with showtimes at 7 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Tickets start at $25.

The 59th National Mother Lode Exhibit highlights over 95 pieces of art beginning 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday. It continues from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. This free event is located at Mills Station Arts and Cultural Center, 10191 Mills Station Road in Rancho Cordova.

Ecdysis, an exhibition of ceramic sculpture and other pieces of art by Adero Willard will be on display at Axis Art Gallery, 625 S St., in Sacramento starting at noon to 5 p.m. Friday to Sunday. Willard is a professor at Sacramento State. Her work has been exhibited both, nationally and internationally. This event is free.

Claude Monet immersive experience at 31 15th St. in West Sacramento features the artist’s most compelling works in a 360-degree display. Tickets begin at $18.90 for kids age 4 to 12 and $30.90 for everyone 13 and older. Senior citizens 65 and older and student tickets for those ages 13 to 26 are $25.90. There is a $4 processing fee when you book online.

“Ojo” is an exhibit by artist, curator and a former museum director Julio César Morales who grew up along the United States and Mexico border between San Diego and Tijuana. His art explores his lived experiences through a variety of media — including video, prints, watercolors, sculpture and photography. The free event is from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday to Saturday through Nov. 29 at the Jan Shrem and Maria Manetti Shrem of Art, 254 Old Davis Road in Davis.

NFL Watch parties are going on each and every Sunday at various bars as the second half of the NFL season continues to ramp up. San Francisco 49ers fans saw the return of quarterback Brock Purdy in a, 41-22, win against the Arizona Cardinals. Their next game is a Monday night game, Nov. 24, versus the Carolina Panthers. Check out these Sacramento bars to find fans of your favorite team.

Food and haircut drive at The Fade Room, 9643 E. Stockton Blvd., offers holiday food staples and free haircuts to Elk Grove residents from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, according to owner Dwyane Love. Each family will be limited to one bag of items, distributed on a first-come, first-served basis, he said. Donations can be dropped off at the barbershop or sent via Cash App to $thefaderoom916.
