Teen killed, 4 hurt when truck-towed trailer swings into Jeep’s path on Hwy. 50

Roadway fatality

An 18-year-old man was killed and four others — including a 6-year-old child — were injured Sunday night in a head-on crash along Highway 50 near Camp Sacramento in El Dorado County, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The collision occurred just before 7:20 p.m. when a westbound Ford F-250 pickup towing a 32-foot trailer entered a curve at what authorities described as an unsafe speed. CHP officials said the trailer swung into the oncoming lane and collided with an eastbound Jeep Compass carrying five Woodland residents.

The front passenger of the Jeep, an 18-year-old man, died at the scene. His name has not yet been released by the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office’s coroner’s division.

The Jeep’s driver, a 37-year-old woman, and three boys — ages 16, 13 and 6 — were transported to Barton Memorial Hospital in South Lake Tahoe. The 16-year-old suffered major injuries, the 6-year-old was moderately hurt, and the others suffered minor injuries, according to CHP.

The driver of the truck, a 32-year-old man from Lathrop, was not injured.

The CHP’s South Lake Tahoe office is continuing to investigate the crash. Witnesses are asked to contact Officer Julie Heitzman at 530-539-9500.
