More than a dozen Sacramento roads to close for Thanksgiving race. When and where

More than 30,000 runners and walkers are expected to gather in Sacramento on Thanksgiving Day for Run to Feed the Hungry.

The annual race will close several roads in East Sacramento on Thursday, Nov. 27, according to a Monday, Nov. 24 news release from the city of Sacramento.

“Residents and motorists are advised to ... add extra time if they plan on driving in or out of the area during the morning hours on Thursday,” the city said in the release.

Here’s what to know:

What is Run to Feed the Hungry in East Sacramento?

Now in its 32nd year, Run to Feed the Hungry is an annual 10-kilometer run and 5-kilometer run and walk that benefits Sacramento Food Bank & Family Services.

A total of 31,660 turkey trotters participated in the race in 2024, according to the Run to Feed the website said.

As of Tuesday, Nov. 25, registration for the race was still open. It cost $49.76 or $28.03 for youth 17 and under.

When does race start on Thanksgiving Day? End?

The 10-kilometer race will kick off at 8:15 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 27, and the 5-kilometer run and walk will begin at 9 a.m.

Participants will start on J Street “just west of the entrance to the Sacramento State campus,” the release said, ending at H Street near Carlson Drive.

Both events are expected to finish around noon Thursday.

Which Sacramento streets will close for Thanksgiving event?

According to the city, here’s which roads will be closed in East Sacramento due to Thursday’s race:

  • J Street (Carlson Drive to 45th Street)
  • 45th Street (J Street to Folsom Boulevard)
  • Folsom Boulevard (45th to 41st streets)
  • 41st Street (Folsom Boulevard to H Street)
  • H Street (Alhambra Boulevard to 55th Street)
  • Alhambra Boulevard (H Street to McKinley Boulevard)
  • McKinley Boulevard (Alhambra Boulevard to Elvas Avenue)
  • Elvas Avenue (McKinley Boulevard to 51st Street)
  • 51st Street (Elvas Avenue to D Street)
  • D Street (51st Street to Coloma Way)
  • Coloma Way (D Street to Pico Way)
  • Pico Way (Coloma Way to F Street)
  • F Street (Pico Way to 47th Street)
  • 47th Street (F to H streets)

“Roads will remain closed to traffic until approximately noon” on Thursday, the city said.

Area residents can check the city’s neighborhood exit plan to see race schedules, traffic impacts and exit routes.
