Night closures set on key Sacramento roadway this week. What to know
Night paving work will tie up traffic on Franklin Boulevard in Sacramento’s North City Farms neighborhood beginning Sunday evening, city officials said.
Construction crews will grind the existing asphalt roadway between Sutterville Road and 32nd Avenue from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. each night through Friday morning, the city said in a news release.
Are traffic delays expected?
“Franklin Boulevard may have one-way traffic and temporary closures as crews work through each intersection,” the city said. “Residents and businesses will always have access to their properties.”
Detours, delays and lower traffic speeds are expected.
Motorists and residents also can expect lane shifts, traffic controls, intersection closures, construction noise and no street parking during the work, officials said.
Franklin Boulevard will be open during the day after grinding operations end each morning.
Why work overnight?
“The amount of traffic on Franklin Boulevard during the day can make these operations challenging and could prolong disruptions for the community,” said Senior Engineer Megan Johnson in the statement. “Night work allows crews to complete paving more efficiently and safely.”
Heavy daytime traffic would pose dangers for workers and drivers, the city said.
“Daytime construction would also result in significant delays for buses, local businesses, residents and Ethel Phillips Elementary School,” the city said.
What is the next phase?
Crews will return next Sunday, Dec. 14, to begin final paving, officials said.
That work, which also will be done overnight, is expected to conclude the morning of Friday, Dec. 19, depending on the weather.
