A Truckee Meadows fire captain and his wife were identified as the two killed Sunday near Kyburz in a crash that left their two children seriously hurt.

Ryan Paul Rizzuto, 42, and Danielle Marie Rizzuto, 41, of Reno, died in the wreck, coroner’s officials confirmed, according to a statement from El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office.

Ryan Rizzuto served as a battalion chief with the Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District, Truckee fire officials confirmed in an announcement posted to its Facebook page.

“The Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District is deeply saddened to announce the off-duty passing of one of our members, Battalion Chief Ryan Rizzuto,” the post read. “Sunday night, the district was notified that he had passed away while off duty. Our entire TMFPD family is grieving this unexpected loss.”

The Rizzutos were traveling east on Highway 50 about 3:11 p.m. Sunday when their Chevrolet pickup truck left the roadway and crashed into a tree on the south side of the highway near Kyburz, said officials at the California Highway Patrol’s Placerville office.

Both Ryan and Danielle Rizzuto, who were seated in the truck’s front seats, were pronounced dead at the scene.

An 11-year-old girl and a boy, 8 years old, in the truck’s rear seats, sustained major injuries in the crash and were taken by air ambulance to a Reno hospital to be treated, said CHP officials.
