Remains found along Nevada County hiking trail in March ID’d as 55-year-old man
California Department of Justice officials have identified a 55-year-old man whose remains were found in Nevada City in March.
Aaran Sloan Taylor’s remains were found by three hikers on March 25 off a popular hiking trail near the South Yuba River in Nevada City, said Nevada County coroner’s officials. State justice department officials on Dec. 8 notified Nevada County they had positively identified the remains as Taylor’s.
Taylor was known to frequent the area of Miner’s Trail in Nevada City, said county officials. Coroner’s officials in a statement Tuesday said they are awaiting an official cause of death, but believe Taylor’s death was not suspicious.
The hikers had broken trail, Nevada County Sheriff’s Office said in March, cutting their own path through brush and across rugged terrain, when they located a human skull. The three hiked back to the South Yuba Fork bridge and called authorities. Nevada County Sheriff’s deputies recovered the skull and other remains.
A team of sheriff’s detectives, search and rescue workers, California State Parks officials and anthropologists from Chico State University continued the work of extracting the remains and gathering evidence to determine the man’s identity, said sheriff’s officials at the time.
Meantime, Nevada County officials continue to seek Taylor’s relatives.
“The coroner’s office has attempted to identify and locate any next of kin for Aaran Taylor, to no avail,” officials said Tuesday.
