Sacramento firefighters rescued a construction worker Thursday morning after he fell about 30 feet into a basement area at the Sacramento County Administration Center downtown, fire officials said.

The worker, a 72-year-old man, was listed in serious condition at a hospital, according to Sacramento Fire Department Capt. Justin Sylvia.

The man fell onto a swamp cooler unit at the building at 700 H St., injuring his leg and prompting a high-angle rescue, Sylvia said.

As many as 50 firefighters responded to the incident and personnel used ropes and a basket stretcher to hoist the man to ground level before transporting him to the hospital, Sylvia said.
