Sacramento Regional Transit’s Gold Line SacRT has reopened with some delays, officials said, after copper wire thieves shut down a lengthy stretch of the route for hours Monday.

Service was restored about 2:30 p.m. on the route from 13th Street in downtown Sacramento to Sac RT’s Power Inn station near the intersection of Power Inn Road and Folsom Boulevard, transit officials said.

Buses were being used to carry passengers between the two stations while crews worked to restore service, transit officials said in a social media post.

SacRT recorded 49 incidents involving vandalism or copper theft in 2025, transit officials said. The damage is costly, $10,000 to $20,000 an incident, with costs as high as $50,000 or more for more serious damage, said SacRT officials.

“Copper theft and related vandalism have become a growing challenge for transit agencies nationwide, impacting public infrastructure and posing serious safety risks,” SacRT officials said in a statement. “These crimes cause significant service disruptions and delays, particularly to light rail operations.”
