A public memorial is scheduled to take place later this month for Rep. Doug LaMalfa, R-Oroville, who died last week during surgery after he suffered a medical emergency.

LaMalfa, a staunch advocate for gun rights, farmers and rural Californians, had served in the U.S. House of Representatives since 2012. The congressman was a reliably conservative voice in the House. He easily won reelection in race after race, including a 2024 victory with 65.3% of the vote.

The memorial for LaMalfa is scheduled Jan. 24 at the Silver Dollar Fairgrounds in Chico. Parking for attendees opens at 9:30 a.m., and the gates will open at 10 a.m., according to an online flier for the memorial.

Tickets are required to attend the memorial, and each attendee including children must fill out the online form to obtain a ticket. Organizers asked attendees to arrive early for security screenings; no weapons, signs or large bags are allowed inside the venue.

LaMalfa was a fourth-generation rice farmer from Richvale who first entered politics in 2002. That year, he won a crowded Republican primary to represent the 2nd Assembly district after Richard Dickerson stepped down to run for state Senate.

LaMalfa served in the state Assembly until 2008, when he stepped aside due to term limits. He served a single term in the Senate from 2010 to 2012, after which he was elected to Congress, representing the state’s 1st District.

In lieu of flowers, organizers asked attendees to please consider donating to the Oroville Rescue Mission, an organization “near and dear” to the LaMalfa Family. The congressman is survived by his wife Jill and four children.
