‘Leaf season’ is ending in Sacramento. When is the last service scheduled?
Sacramento’s leaf season is coming to an end and will have their final collection this upcoming weekend.
But how can you prepare for the final collection, and when is it?
Here’s what to know:
What is leaf season?
Leaf service is from November and continued until the end of January. It is the time when trees naturally shed their leaves and when the Recycling and Solid Waste Division staff assist in cleaning the leaves that pile on public streets.
During leaf season, residents can pile yard waste loose in the street for pickup by “the claw” tractor.
The city of Sacramento recommends residents to always fill their personal yard waste containers first before making a pile, as containerized organic waste collection occurs weekly during leaf season and throughout the year.
“Over 60 million pounds of yard waste is collected during a typical leaf season, mostly in curbside containers,” said Jesa David, spokesperson for the Division, in a statement. “The more material we can collect in containers, the more quickly our claw crews can finish their rounds.”
When is the final collection?
Final pickup for all piles on the street will be collected on Sunday, Feb. 1, according to the city.
Properties that receive leaf season service will have a pickup at least seven times throughout leaf season and only residents on public streets receive the service.
After the final pickup is over, the same crews and equipment will be collecting bulky waste through household junk pickups which can be scheduled February through October by contacting City Customer Service at 311 or 916-808-5011 or making an online service request.
Where can people check when collection is happening in their area?
Residents can check the collection calendar to see if they receive service and when the next pickup is estimated to occur, according to the city.
The calendar is updated daily and may change frequently.
How to prepare for the final collection?
The city of Sacramento recommends that residents continue to observe proper leaf season guidelines for final service. The guidelines are as follows:
- Piles should not exceed four feet by four feet by nine feet and be no more than five cubic yards.
- Limbs must be cut to 3 feet or less in length and no more than 4 inches in diameter.
- Place the pile 6 feet from any obstruction (e.g. cars, boats, basketball hoops etc.)
- Make sure there is space between the curb and pile to allow water to flow to storm drains.
- When possible, avoid placing piles in bike lanes.
- Holiday trees are accepted in piles (remove any plastic, glass or metal decor).
