‘Iconic’ wheel outside Rancho Cordova furniture store destroyed in crash

The landmark water wheel outside Rancho Cordova furniture store Naturwood Home Furnishings was destroyed early Saturday morning after a vehicle traveling on Highway 50 crashed into it, a spokesperson for the California Highway Patrol said.

The vehicle was traveling eastbound on Highway 50 before running off of the road and crashing into a chain link fence and the wrought-iron fence around the business’ parking lot at approximately 3:30 a.m., the spokesperson said. The vehicle then struck “the iconic water wheel,” the spokesperson said.

“The engine block of the vehicle was displaced and found under the vehicle,” a release from the CHP said.

The driver, a 23-year-old man, sustained critical but not life-threatening injuries, the spokesperson said. The CHP release said the driver was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.

Lisa Keyes, Naturwood Home Furnishings’ president, and Regina Vasquez, the store’s manager, both said the “main concern” is the victim of the crash.

“We want him to fully recover,” Keyes said. “It was such a violent accident.”

Vasquez said the company president’s great-grandfather built the wheel with his son. It has been at the location since 1984, and the business is “known as the building with the wheel.”

The business is planning to rebuild the wheel, though there is not a timeline yet, Vasquez said.

“We have to,” Vasquez said. “Absolutely.”
