Deputies shoot man with gun in Vineyard vehicle stop, Sacramento sheriff says
A man was hospitalized Monday night after being shot by two Sacramento County sheriff’s deputies during a vehicle stop in the Vineyard neighborhood of south Sacramento.
The shooting occurred just after 7:30 p.m. along southbound Elk Grove Florin Road at Tiogawoods Drive, just south of Gerber Road, according to the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office.
“While on patrol, our deputies observed a vehicle involved in an ongoing felony investigation,” said Sgt. Ed Igoe, a spokesperson for the Sheriff’s Office. “The deputies conducted a traffic stop, which led to an officer-involved shooting.”
Igoe said the deputies saw the driver, the sole occupant of the Mitsubishi Mirage hatchback, armed with a gun. It was unclear if the man pointed the gun at or fired on the deputies.
Both deputies fired on the man, he said, but it was not clear how many shots were fired.
“The suspect was struck and deputies immediately began providing medical attention,” he said. “The suspect was transported to a local area hospital in unknown condition. The suspect’s firearm was located at the scene.”
The man, believed to be in his 40s, was taken to Kaiser Permanente South Sacramento Medical Center.
Neither deputy was injured, Igoe said.
Detectives from the Sheriff’s Office were expected to remain at the scene for several hours. Elk Grove Florin Road remained closed between Gerber and Caselman roads.
The incident marked the first officer-involved shooting by the Sheriff’s Office since Dec. 2, when deputies shot and killed Marvin Morales following a high-speed chase. Authorities said the ex-deputy fled his Elk Grove home after he fatally stabbed his 11-year-old son.
In that case, Morales was shot by two Sacramento County deputies during a confrontation along Interstate 5 in San Joaquin County after crashing his vehicle. The California Department of Justice later announced it would investigate the shooting under state law governing fatal encounters involving potentially unarmed subjects.
As with other deputy-involved shootings, the Sheriff’s Office was expected to place the deputy who fired the weapon on administrative leave pending an internal investigation. The Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office will conduct its own review, a standard practice in such cases.
