A break in the heat? Rain may be on the horizon in Sacramento after record temps
No, this is not a prank. April showers could reach Sacramento at the start of the month, according to National Weather Service forecasts Friday.
After a stretch of “well above normal” high temperatures for March, including some record-breaking days, the weather pattern over Northern California appears to be poised to shift early next week.
Here’s what to know about the incoming weather system.
Will the rain return to Sacramento?
The weather service’s Sacramento office said in a social media post Friday that a storm track may be headed for the West Coast in the coming days.
This new pattern, which could push out a high pressure system that trapped hot air throughout the area for nearly two weeks, is set to bring moisture, breezy winds and even the possibility of thunder to the region.
A chance of rain is forecast to arrive to the capital city Monday night, sticking around at least through Thursday. The probability is expected to be highest on Wednesday night, according to a forecast.
Is there snow in the forecast for the Sierra Nevada?
A forecast discussion by the weather service published Friday indicated the incoming storm system could bring ideal conditions for spring snow showers.
Snow is expected starting Tuesday, at around 6,000-7,000 feet of elevation, before dropping to 5,000-6,000 feet on Wednesday and Thursday.
The weather service said in its forecast discussion that trends may change over the coming days, but weather models showed increasing confidence in the chance for snow next week.
When will temperatures drop in Sacramento?
Through the weekend, highs are expected to stay in the low- to mid-80s, the weather service reported on Friday.
By Monday, Sacramento temperatures could dip into the 70s and continue dropping through the rest of the workweek. By Tuesday, the region may see its first day with its highest temperature in the 60s since the start of March.
Monday’s forecast predicts a high temperature of 76 and low of 54. On Tuesday, the weather is expected to have a high of around 66 and a low near 52.
On Wednesday, April 1, the forecast calls for a high at 64 and the low temperature at roughly 47. On Thursday, the high is forecast around 65 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.
