Elderly couple found dead in car submerged in south Sutter County canal

Drowning incident depicts emergency personnel at water canal

An elderly couple was found dead Sunday after their car was discovered submerged in a canal along a south Sutter County farm road, California Highway Patrol officials said.

The car was located about 4:30 p.m. Sunday in a canal off southbound Powerline Road, south of Striplin Road, on private property, officials from the CHP’s Yuba-Sutter office said.

A person walking along the road spotted the car in the water and called emergency dispatchers. A Yuba City Fire Department water rescue crew recovered the vehicle with two occupants inside, described as an elderly man and woman. The vehicle had Nevada license plates, CHP officials said.

The identities of the man and woman will be released by the Sutter County Coroner’s Office once next of kin are notified.

CHP officials said tire tracks showed the vehicle had been traveling north on Catlett Road before reaching a 90-degree turn where the driver attempted a three-point turn. Officials said the driver reversed the vehicle into the canal during the maneuver. Only a portion of the rear roof was visible from the road, CHP said.

The cause of the crash remained under investigation.
