Sacramento County said it would begin testing its emergency alert system twice a year, with the first test scheduled for this week.

The Sacramento County Office of Emergency Services said the first alert would be sent Wednesday.

Test emergency alerts previously were sent once a year in the fall, according to county officials.

The county encouraged residents to sign up for Sacramento Alert through Smart911.

“Those already enrolled are asked to take a moment to review and update their contact details,” Sacramento County said in a press release. “The process takes less than five minutes and ensures that you receive important information quickly in case of a natural disaster such as a fire, earthquake or flooding.”

The county also encouraged those who commute to Sacramento County for work from nearby areas to enroll.

“To make sure all communities are reached — alerts can be customized to the specific area you live or work within Sacramento County,” the press release said.

After the alert goes out Wednesday, the county said residents were encouraged to respond to a survey to provide feedback on the test.
