The Sacramento Bee’s Local Engagement and Retention team turned the microphone over to our newsroom staff and asked for the best spots in the Capitol region to celebrate Mother’s Day.

Here’s what our staff of reporters, photojournalists and local engagement and retention reporters said:

Crocker Art Museum

The Bee’s food and dinning reporter Sean Timberlake and op-ed editor Hannah Holzer both gave praise to a local art staple.

The Crocker Art Museum is the oldest art museum in the Western United States, according to its website.

Established in 1885, the museum features Californian, Asian, European, African and Oceanic art collections plus a wide range of special exhibits and programs. “My mother enjoys art, and we are members at the Crocker, so I would probably take her there,” Timberlake said. “She’s no aficionado, but she just likes the outing.”

Admission for adults is $15, seniors is $10, college students is $10 and youth (ages 6-17) is $8. Kids under the age of five and under enter free.

Crocker Art Museum Address: 216 O Street, Sacramento, CA 95814

Hours: Closed Monday-Tuesday; 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Wednesday, Saturday-Sunday; 10 a.m.-9 p.m. Thursdays

Pazza Notte

This midtown eatery offers delicious Italian-American eats in a vibrant dining scene with an outdoor patio.

Pazza Notte delivers artisanal pasta like the pappardelle di mare ($31), consisting of sauteed lobster, shrimp, crab, asparagus, mixed vegetables and a sherry shallot cream sauce; authentic wood-fired pizza like the pizza forestale ($25), which includes roasted portobello mushrooms, goat cheese and truffle oil.

For a sweet treat, order the gelato ($8), made fresh everyday in house, with changing daily flavors like tiramisu, summer berries and butter pecan.

The restaurant, founded in 2000, boasts a simple philosophy: “to use the best ingredients we could find, do as little to them as possible, and leave the quality and flavors to shine,” its website said.

Out of town this Mother’s Day weekend? Pazza Notte also has a spot in midtown Manhattan, New York.

State Capitol Park World Peace Rose Garden

If you have yet to walk around the Golden State’s Capitol building, now’s the chance! The State Capitol Park World Peace Rose Garden, along with Cafeteria 15L restaurant, was suggested by executive editor Chris Fusco.

The World Peace Rose Garden, established in 2003, holds more than 650 roses with more than 153 varying colors and fragrances, and is a part of the International World Peace Rose Gardens organization.

The garden was established for women, children and families and serves as a physical symbol and sanctuary of peace, love and inspiration for all. At its center is a Victorian-style fountain, along with many pathways and lined benches, a section honoring veterans and another section engraved with peace messages written by elementary school children.

“My mother-in-law will be in Illinois this year. But if we can ever lure her to Sacramento for Mother’s Day, we’d take pictures in the Rose Garden at the Capitol before going to Cafeteria 15L for brunch,” Fusco said. “It’s nice for both to be so close to each other.”

State Capitol Park World Peace Rose Garden Address: 1317 15th St, Sacramento, California 95814, located in California State Capitol Park

Cafeteria 15L

Just as Fusco said, right across the street from the Rose Garden, this downtown restaurant is serving Mother’s Day specials.

Cafeteria 15L is an eclectic American comfort food restaurant with breakfast, lunch and dinner options, a perfect family-friendly spot with Mom.

Share and enjoy several Mother’s Day dining exclusives include the crab benedict ($19.95) for brunch; steak frites ($34.95) and pan seared scallops ($29.95) for dinner and cherry almond cake ($9.50) for dessert.

Atrium 916

A sustainability-centered art hub that sits on the Old Sacramento Waterfront is my pick for Mother’s Day activities and events (if I brought her to Sacramento from Florida). Atrium 916 is an eco-friendly cafe, art gallery, art supply store and gift shop all in one. Art enthusiasts can order a kombucha ($7) or a pot of tea ($10) while working on projects.

The nonprofit offers various art and crafts activities where attendees can sculpt and paint a clay magnet for $17.85, paint a canvas for $23.18 and paint a reusable tote bag for $27.45.

Registration for the specific Creative Mother’s Day Date event can be found here.
