Fire weather watch issued for Northern CA, first of year for Sacramento area
A fire weather watch issued by the National Weather Service is expected cover much of California’s Central Valley beginning this weekend, with gusty winds and low humidity in the forecast.
The fire weather watch will go into effect at 3 a.m. Saturday and conclude at 8 p.m. Monday, according to the weather service. Meteorologist Dakari Anderson of the weather service said this is the Sacramento area’s first fire weather watch of the year.
This weekend’s watch stretches north to Redding and south past Bakersfield, west to Vallejo and east toward Auburn, including Sacramento, Fresno, Stockton and Modesto.
The weather service says winds could reach 35 miles per hour Saturday and Sunday. That could increase to 50 mph near the Sacramento–San Joaquin River Delta. Humidity could be 20% or less Saturday, dropping to less than 15% Sunday.
Temperatures could see a high of 83 degrees Saturday and 82 degrees on Sunday, according to the weather service. Temperatures may increase Monday to 88 degrees.
There are currently four active wildfires in California. The largest fire is the Neuralia Fire in Kern County, spanning nearly 1,200 acres. The smallest is the River Fire in Siskiyou County that spans 16 acres.
