From state workers pushing back on a return-to-office order to a unique ice cream shop in Oak Park, here is a quick digest of today’s top stories:
- State workers surveyed by The Sacramento Bee cited financial strain from gas prices nearing $6 a gallon and high childcare costs as their top concern about Gov. Gavin Newsom’s return-to-office order. Roughly three out of four of the more than 150 respondents pointed to commuting costs, while many also warned the mandate would disrupt work-life balance.
- Oak Park has a new community anchor in Licked, an ice cream shop that opened in 2024 by Susan Stewart and her partner Darcie Weinberg. The shop sources its ice cream from Chocolate Shoppe Ice Cream in Madison, Wisconsin, and sits across the street from the couple’s home and gift store, Strapping.
- A 30-second commercial airing during 2026 FIFA World Cup games on Fox offered a first look at the Dova Arena project in Rancho Cordova, the planned home of two Major Arena Soccer League teams. The 10,000-capacity, privately funded arena could later expand to include housing, hotels, retail, a card room, a movie theater and a bowling alley.
