Demolition to clear site for downtown Davis apartment complex to begin next week
Demolition of the former Hibbert Lumber hardware store in downtown Davis is scheduled to begin next week, the city announced on Tuesday. The building will be replaced by a mixed-use apartment complex that is in the process of obtaining city permits.
The Davis Planning Commission approved plans to build The Lumberyard, a five-story, mixed-use development located at the corner of 5th and G Streets two years ago. The project includes studios as well as one-, two-, three- and four-bedroom apartments totaling 239 units, according to a city news release. It also includes 11 affordable units, deed restricted to people making less than 50% of the area median income.
The Lumberyard will have ground-floor retail space, a roof deck and storage for more than 300 bicycles. The building will feature rustic reds, corrugated metal and siding that looks like wood as a nod to the hardware store it will replace, according to a project description.
The development process will begin with about five weeks of demolition to clear the existing structure followed by two weeks of grading. Before demolition begins on July 13, the Davis Fire Department will be using the building for training between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m., which will include fire department vehicles and the use of theatrical smoke.
The construction will be carried out by Brown Construction. The project will close the sidewalk on the north side of Fifth Street between G Street and the railroad tracks. Sixth Street between G and the railroad tracks will be closed during construction hours, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday–Friday.
