Monsoon weather, garbage bin inspection. Sacramento’s top stories for July 13
Monsoon rain hits the Central Valley this week before triple-digit heat returns Tuesday. Meanwhile, Sacramento launches curbside garbage inspections, and a beloved Oak Park ice cream shop announces its closing.
Here’s a quick rundown of Monday’s top stories:
- A strong North American monsoon is bringing clouds and rare summer rain showers to the Central Valley through Tuesday morning, with a heat dome over the Rockies pushing triple-digit temperatures from Redding to Bakersfield on Tuesday and Wednesday. Overnight lows will run notably warmer than usual, and brief thunderstorms could spark dry lightning in the Sierra.
- Sacramento’s Recycling and Solid Waste Department will inspect about 5,000 residential curbside garbage bins from July through September to check whether residents are properly separating recyclables, organic waste and trash. The inspections are required under Senate Bill 1383.
- Licked, the Oak Park ice cream salon at 3400 Broadway, will close at the end of the month after two years in business, owner Susan Stewart announced. Stewart cited a lackluster summer season and said she will focus on her flagship home and gift store, Strapping, also in Oak Park.
