The body of man in his 20s was recovered from the American River Sunday morning.

The man had been swimming in the river with a family member around 6 p.m. Saturday, said Sacramento Metro Fire Department spokesman Capt. Adam Huckaby. A few hours later, the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department received a report he was missing.

Sheriff’s deputies began to search for him using helicopters and boats, and later called in Sacramento Metro Fire for assistance.

The search was called off at 1:30 a.m. and resumed the next morning, Huckaby said.

Shortly before noon, Sacramento Metro Fire personnel located the body under about 8 feet of water downriver from the San Juan Rapids.

Officials do not believe he had been wearing a life jacket, Huckaby said.
