A 27-year-old man who died Monday inside a holding cell at the Sacramento County Main Jail has been identified by the coroner as Sacramento resident Michael Rachel.

Rachel died just before 6 p.m., according to the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department. He had been arrested earlier that day by the Rancho Cordova Police Department and booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail about 2:45 p.m. on suspicion of misdemeanor public intoxication, officials said.

Rachel died at 5:55 p.m. Monday, according to the county Coroner’s Office. His death was not being treated as suspicious, the Sheriff’s Department said.

An autopsy is still pending, and no cause of death was immediately released.

The Sheriff’s Department has said it will conduct an inmate-death investigation in accordance with department procedures and state law.
