Coroner’s Office identifies woman struck and killed on El Camino Avenue

A woman who was struck and killed by a vehicle as she was pushing a shopping cart early Tuesday morning has been identified by the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office as Raquel Gonzalez De Castrejon of Sacramento.

Gonzalez De Castrejon, 75, was pushing the cart down El Camino Avenue near Connie Drive about 6:30 a.m. when she was struck by a Nissan sedan, Sacramento police Lt. Paul Freeman said. The driver initially was thought to be fleeing the scene, but made a U-turn and called in the crash.

Gonzalez De Castrejon was taken to UC Davis Medical Center, where she died of her injuries. The Nissan’s window was smashed on the passenger side.

The sidewalk near the collision site is about 4 feet wide and partially obstructed by a utility tower. Freeman said the woman may have stepped off the sidewalk into “moderate-to-heavy” rush-hour traffic.
