Charles Lee Ewers, the Carmichael father of two who authorities say tried to kill his children, then end his own life during a custody visit, will return May 8 to Sacramento Superior Court.

Ewers remains held without bail in Sacramento County custody on allegations of attempted murder and willful harm to a child causing great bodily injury against the two children, ages 8 and 10, in the April 4 incident. Ewers had been scheduled to appear Friday in the jailhouse courtroom where he last appeared, barefoot, restrained and wearing a heavy safety suit.

Deputies were called April 4 by the children’s mother to Ewers’ North Avenue home. There they found Ewers and his badly beaten and semi-conscious children in a car inside a locked garage, the engine running and a pipe leading from the exhaust into the car. Prosecutors allege in a criminal complaint that Ewers used a mallet in the attack.

Investigators said the children’s injuries were “significant.”
