Two killed in second fatal collision on Highway 99 Monday, CHP says

A three-car collision killed two on Monday afternoon on Highway 99 near Riego Road, following a separate fatal incident at the Sutter County freeway exit the same morning.

A 47-year-old Yuba City man driving a Hyundai Tuscon eastbound drifted into the right shoulder of Riego Road at around 4:23 p.m. Monday, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The man then veered into oncoming traffic on westbound Highway 99, causing his vehicle to collide with a Ford F-350 being driven by an 18-year-old Oroville man and a Toyota Corolla being driven by a 53-year-old Roseville man, according to a news release from the CHP.

Both the Tuscon and the Corolla came to rest in the middle of Riego Road, officers said, and both drivers were pronounced dead at the scene.

The Ford F-350 sustained major damage but its driver only suffered minor injuries, according to the CHP. The man, Brycen Benedict, was taken to the Rideout Medical Center for his injuries.

Earlier Monday, a 55-year-old Berry Creek man was driving southbound in a Chevrolet on Highway 99 when he drifted off the side of the road into a dirt shoulder around 12:15 a.m., according to the CHP.

A 37-year-old Oroville woman in a Volkswagen was traveling in the northbound lane when her car was struck by the Chevy. Both vehicles ended up in the east dirt shoulder as a result of the crash, according to the CHP.

The woman was taken to the UC Davis Medical Center to treat moderate injuries as a result of the crash, officers said. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.
