Elk Grove elementary school lockdown lifted after barricaded suspect is detained

The Elk Grove Police Department says one man was detained after he barricaded himself inside a home near Zehnder Ranch Elementary on Tuesday afternoon, and the school lockdown that was initiated as a precaution was lifted a short time later.

The police said on social media initially that it was serving a search warrant on Denali Circle and was locking down the campus as a “precautionary” measure only, at around 12:20 p.m. Shortly after 1:10 p.m., Elk Grove Police said in a tweet that officers were “attempting to make contact with a barricaded subject inside of a residence,” and urged people to avoid the area. Then, just before 1:30 p.m., police tweeted that the subject had been detained.

According to a news release, Elk Grove detectives had been conducting surveillance of a Denali Circle home when they recognized 40-year-old Willy Ong, who had an active warrant for his arrest, exiting the garage of the home in a vehicle. Police say Ong drove the car back into the garage and refused numerous calls from law enforcement to come out to surrender.

Elk Grove Police Department SWAT entered the home at 1:24 p.m. after removing the garage door, according to the release. Police say they detained Ong after a short struggle, and he was booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail on charges of resisting an executive officer and possession of a controlled substance, and on the active warrant.

Tuesday marked the second straight day for an Elk Grove elementary school lockdown. On Monday, police said Carroll Elementary was briefly locked down due to reports of early-morning gunfire in a nearby neighborhood, which authorities said turned out to be “unfounded.”
