2 hurt, in unknown condition after possible ‘targeted’ freeway shooting in Sacramento, CHP says
The California Highway Patrol is continuing to investigate a shooting Monday evening on the Capital City Freeway in Sacramento sent two people to the hospital.
Officers responded to a vehicle stopped on the shoulder of northbound traffic near El Camino Avenue under suspicious circumstances, “with doors open, lights on” but nobody inside, CHP North Sacramento spokesman A.J. McTaggart said Tuesday morning.
Arriving officers Monday night “realized the vehicle had been shot at several times” and discovered nearby shell casings, McTaggart said.
Two gunshot victims were treated at a hospital within the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office’s jurisdiction late Monday, spokeswoman Sgt. Tess Deterding said, but “it was later determined the crime occurred in CHP jurisdiction.”
Valley Division spokesman Officer Mike Harris confirmed Tuesday that those two victims were linked to the Capital City Freeway shooting, which he said appeared to be “maybe a targeted attack,” based on preliminary investigation.
“It doesn’t appear to have been a random shooting,” Harris said, adding that the suspect or suspects were likely known to the victims.
Deterding and Harris said the extent of the victims’ injuries and their status at the hospital was not known.
All northbound lanes were then shut down for more than three hours, from just before 8 p.m. to shortly after 11 p.m. Monday according to Caltrans and CHP North Sacramento on Twitter, as law enforcement investigated and gathered evidence. The investigation was forwarded to CHP’s Valley Division.
Harris said suspect information is limited, and he urged anyone who may have witnessed Monday night’s incident to contact the CHP’s Valley Division at 916-731-6300.
