Police book man, 18, after vehicle pursuit that ended with crash into West Sacramento tree

A man arrested Saturday following a police pursuit from Natomas to West Sacramento, ending when his vehicle crashed into a tree, has been identified by the Sacramento Police Department.

Matthew McConnell, 18, was booked into the Sacramento County jail Monday on charges of felony evasion, possession of a stolen vehicle and other misdemeanor charges following his hospital release, the agency said in an emailed statement.

The driver had fled from officers during an attempted traffic stop near West El Camino Avenue and Truxel Road, traveling south on Interstate 5 just after 5 p.m. Saturday before exiting at Richards Boulevard, police said over the weekend. The suspect’s car got a flat tire and shed other parts as the vehicle rode on its rim, heading across the I Street Bridge into West Sacramento.

The car then crashed into a tree near the 600 block of Sacramento Avenue, and McConnell was apprehended after a short foot pursuit. He was detained and taken to a hospital for injuries sustained in the crash, the Police Department said in an earlier news release.

McConnell is ineligible for bail due to a 2019 rearrest for a misdemeanor charge of unlawfully using another person’s identifying information, jail records show.
