Authorities remove 15,000 pounds of trash from Rancho Cordova homeless camping area

Authorities have removed about 15,000 pounds of trash along the American River Parkway in Rancho Cordova, an area that’s been the focus of complaints of illegal garbage dumping and homeless encampments, officials said Thursday.

The trash removal was announced on the Rancho Cordova city government’s Facebook page. Photos of the cleanup efforts were posted on the page.

City officials said they received complaints and calls for service of health and safety hazards about the area just north of the Sunriver neighborhood.

On Sunday, the Rancho Cordova Homeless Outreach Team, which includes an outreach worker and Rancho Cordova police code enforcement, went to the area to start the cleanup.

The homeless outreach team was joined by the Sacramento County Regional Parks Rangers and participants of the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Work Project, which allows some convicted jail inmates the chance to join work crews and earn a reduced sentence.

Most of the trash was illegally dumped in the area, city officials said. The homeless outreach team also offered information about services to a few homeless people who were either camping there or traveling through the area.

Rancho Cordova police also arrested two people suspected of possessing drugs and violating probation, according to city officials.

Earlier this week, the Rocklin Police Department announced that it helped property owners clean up 18 homeless camps and advised people living there illegally that they’re trespassing. But the officers also helped them with Placer County resources for the homeless.
