Elk Grove police arrest department crime prevention specialist accused of grand theft

An Elk Grove Police Department employee was arrested on suspicion of grand theft a few hours after his employment ended at the department, where he worked as a crime prevention specialist.

Kristopher Reed Packwood was arrested about noon Tuesday at the Police Department, said Officer Jason Jimenez, a police spokesman. He said on Wednesday evening that Packwood’s job with Elk Grove police ended Tuesday morning.

Jimenez said Packwood was a non-sworn employee who worked on crime prevention programs and was a liaison between the department and Neighborhood Watch groups.

On the same day of his arrest, prosecutors filed a criminal complaint against Packwood, according to Sacramento Superior Court records. Packwood has been charged with three counts of grand theft, which indicates allegations of theft that exceeds $950 in value.

Packwood also has been charged with one count of theft or fraud of an elderly person, according to court records. The specific details of the allegations against Packwood were unclear Wednesday.

Jimenez said Elk Grove police received information about the allegations, launched an investigation soon after and arrested Packwood this week. He said the investigation was ongoing and he could only say that the alleged crimes did not occur while Packwood was on duty.

Packwood was booked at the Sacramento County jail and released the same day. He was scheduled to make his first court appearance Thursday afternoon for an arraignment.
