Woman and 1-year-old baby lost in Sierra Nevada rescued by Butte County deputies
A woman and her 1-year-old baby who got lost while driving from Sacramento to Oroville were safely recovered by Butte County deputies Saturday night.
In a news release, the Butte County Sheriff’s Office said the woman called dispatchers around 9 p.m. and told them that her GPS navigator directed her to take Lumpkin Road off Highway 70, but had led her astray and gotten her car stuck in the snow.
Dispatchers were unable to retrieve her location from her GPS, but continued to talk with her to get a better idea of where the woman was stuck.
A California Highway Patrol aircraft was called in for assistance, but inclement weather conditions deterred its deployment.
Two Butte County deputies responded to Lumpkin Road and began searching the area for landmarks that the woman mentioned passing on her way.
After hours of searching, deputies found the woman and her child around 1 a.m. in Plumas County on Hartman Bar Ridge Road in the Sierra Nevadas. The deputies pushed her car out of the snow and escorted her back to Oroville.
