Sacramento pair arrested after stealing from foreclosed home, Placer sheriff says

Placer County sheriff’s deputies have arrested two Sacramento residents accused of stealing belongings from a foreclosed home in Auburn.

The man who once lived at the foreclosed home in north Auburn returned about 1:30 p.m. Sunday to gather his belongings. He encountered Mitchell Hutler, 33, and Samantha Cushing, 28, the Placer County Sheriff’s Office announced Thursday on its Facebook page.

Hutler and Cushing’s truck was parked in the driveway of the man’s former home, sheriff’s officials said, and the theft victim saw his property in the truck’s bed. He confronted the suspects.

Sheriff’s officials said Hutler told the man they would return his property, but Hutler and Cushing drove away. Deputies responded to the reported burglary and located the suspects’ truck heading west on Interstate 80, near Horseshoe Bar Road.

The deputies pulled over the truck. Then, they learned that Hutler had a warrant for his arrest in Sacramento County on a charge of drug possession and was on probation.

The deputies found the victim’s property in the truck’s bed, along with heroin hidden in Cushing’s clothing, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Cushing and Hutler were arrested on suspicion of burglary and concealing stolen property. Cushing also was arrested on suspicion of drug possession. Both were released from the Placer County Jail on their own recognizance Tuesday, according to sheriff’s records.
