Man faces murder charge after fatal hit-and-run outside Stockton store, police say
Police arrested a man Sunday following a deadly hit-and-run that occurred a day earlier at a north Stockton shopping center, authorities said.
Dontae Wilburn was arrested on suspicion of murder, felony hit-and-run and resisting arrest, the Stockton Police Department said. Wilburn, 34, was booked shortly before 2 a.m. Sunday and was in custody at San Joaquin County Jail, according to jail records.
Police said two people were injured when the hit-and-run occurred about 3:30 p.m. Saturday outside the Food Source in the 2300 block of West Hammer Lane. Officer Joe Silva, a spokesman for the Stockton Police Department, said investigators believe Wilburn ran over the victims following a verbal dispute.
Officers said a 45-year-old man and a woman in her 40s were struck by a vehicle that fled the scene. Both victims were rushed to hospitals. The man died as a result of his injuries. The woman was treated for minor injuries.
A short time later, officers spotted Wilburn driving at a high rate of speed, Silva said. Wilburn crashed his vehicle and attempted to flee on foot, but he was apprehended. Wilburn resisted arrest as he was being taken into custody, but officers used a Taser to subdue him, Silva said.
