More than 30 suspected of looting and vandalism face charges, Sacramento DA says
Sacramento County prosecutors filed criminal charges against more than 30 people Wednesday in break-ins or vandalism of businesses, restaurants and storefronts late Sunday and early Monday.
The incidents zigzagged Sacramento and suburbs from downtown and midtown to Citrus Heights and the Arden area south to Stockton Boulevard and Cosumnes River Boulevard all in about three hours. They follow charges filed Tuesday against 11 people for looting and other crimes allegedly committed after George Floyd protests.
They include a man and woman with their infant in tow who authorities say led deputies on a brief chase reaching speeds of 100 mph after reportedly fleeing a Boost Mobile cellular phone store on Auburn Boulevard.
The break-in and high-speed pursuit about 2:30 a.m. Monday led to charges of commercial burglary, looting, reckless evasion of a peace officer, child endangerment and receiving stolen property.
Eleven people were arrested in and near the CVS pharmacy, 1701 K St., about 12:30 a.m. Monday, as local law enforcement continued its crackdown on post-protest looting, according to Sacramento County District Attorney’s officials.
Police arrived to find a number of people running from the drug store; the others inside were charged with commercial burglary, looting and receiving stolen property. No names were released.
A half-hour earlier at midnight, at Sunrise Mall in Citrus Heights, police who responded to a break-in at a Vans shoe store arrested a woman who Citrus Heights police say ferried six teens to the store. Boxes of shoes were found in the trunk of the car, according to Sacramento prosecutors. The female driver of a second car near the store’s entrance fled, leading officers on a three-mile chase before she, too, was arrested.
The women face charges of commercial burglary, looting and receiving stolen property. The woman who led police on the three-mile pursuit is also suspected of reckless evasion.
No information was available on the juveniles said to have been inside Sunrise Mall.
A man was stopped and arrested on commercial burglary, looting and receiving stolen property charges midnight Monday morning after fleeing an Arden Way Walgreens.
Antojo Street Taco Bar on N at 16th streets in Sacramento was allegedly hit by a woman and three men. A security guard saw the four flee with bottles of alcohol. The group was soon arrested and now face burglary, looting and stolen property charges.
PF Chang’s restaurant at 15th and J streets and Capitol Garage restaurant a block away on 15th and K were hit at 1 a.m. and 1:40 a.m., respectively. A man arrested at PF Chang’s and the woman arrested at Capitol Garage both face commercial burglary and looting charges. The woman also faces receiving stolen property charges. The man is accused of resisting arrest.
A man carrying a baseball bat and walking away from a Sacramento Tri-Counties Bank branch at 801 K St., with what police say were pills taken from a K Street Rite-Aid, now faces two counts each of commercial burglary and looting along with vandalism and stolen property charges.
At the Target store on Riverside Boulevard near Broadway, a man and woman were arrested about 2 a.m. Monday. Both face charges of commercial burglary, looting and resisting arrest.
An Oxford Street clothing store, 7201 Stockton Blvd., was reportedly hit at 2 a.m. Monday. Authorities say they found two men and a woman carrying merchandise from the store. All face commercial burglary and looting charges.
Helicopter officers above Howe Avenue spotted a man allegedly throwing rocks at a State of California building at 1441 Howe Ave. about 2 a.m. Monday, said district attorney’s officials who pressed attempted burglary, attempted looting and vandalism charges against the man.
Nearby, on Fulton Avenue, about 2:30 a.m. Monday, two men were arrested and are now charged with attempted burglary and attempted looting charges after allegedly attempting to break into Paradyme Sound & Vision.
At the same time in south Sacramento County, a man who sheriff’s deputies say broke into a Chick-Fil-A restaurant on Cosumnes River Boulevard faces burglary, looting and resisting arrest charges.
