6-year-old boy fighting for life after DUI crash in Carmichael; CHP says mother was driving
A young boy is fighting for his life in a Sacramento-area hospital after a woman who is believed to be his mother crashed while apparently driving under the influence early Sunday morning in Carmichael, authorities said.
The California Highway Patrol dispatched officers to a report of a collision after a Mercedes sedan crashed into a concrete wall about 1:30 a.m. Sunday at Dewey Drive and Winding Way. They arrived to find Gina Muniozguren, a 26-year-old Woodland resident, and a 6-year-old boy suffering from major injuries, officers said.
The boy, who was sitting in the front passenger seat, suffered life-threatening injuries, the CHP said. He was rushed to UC Davis Medical Center, where he remained in critical condition Sunday afternoon, officers said.
Muniozguren was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence, but due to her injuries she was taken to Mercy San Juan Medical Center in Carmichael, authorities said. Her injuries were not believed to be life threatening, according to the CHP.
Officers could not immediately verify the familial relationship between the two crash victims, but they share the same last name and investigators believe Muniozguren is the boy’s mother, the CHP said. A public information officer could not specify Sunday whether Muniozguren was suspected of driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
The Highway Patrol is asking anyone who witnessed the crash or can provide additional information to call Officer Greg Zumstein in the North Sacramento-Area CHP Office at (916) 348-2300 or (916) 798-0975.
