Sacramento police say Stanislaus man intentionally drove into 2 bicyclists in midtown
Police have arrested the driver of a vehicle who allegedly struck two bicyclists at two midtown intersections three blocks apart Thursday evening, leaving them seriously injured, according to Sacramento police.
The first traffic collision involving the vehicle and a bicyclist was reported about 6:20 p.m. in the area of 26th and P streets, said Officer Karl Chan, a Sacramento Police Department spokesman.
Shortly after the first reported collision, officers learned of a vehicle and bicyclist collision at 26th and S streets, Chan said.
The driver in the second vehicle collision was detained, and officers determined the same vehicle, a silver Toyota FJ sport-utility vehicle, was involved in both traffic collisions, Chan said.
The silver SUV was found at the second crash site with significant damage to its windshield. Crime scene tape had cordoned off both intersections. A bicycle could be seen on the ground at each collision scene.
Both bicyclists were taken by ambulances to a hospital. Chan said both bicyclists suffered major injuries but were expected to survive.
Based on the investigation so far, “it appears that the collisions were intentional,” Chan said in a email Thursday night. The driver of the silver SUV was later identified as Rick Charles Alarcon, 59, of Hickman in Stanislaus County, according to police.
Alarcon was arrested and is being held without bail in Sacramento County Main Jail. Police said he faces two counts of attempted murder and one count of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
He was scheduled to make his first court appearance Monday afternoon, according to jail records.
