Birthday event for Stephon Clark moved to downtown after Discovery Park closure
An event to celebrate the birthday of Stephon Clark, who was killed by police in 2018, is scheduled Monday in downtown Sacramento.
The event was originally intended to take place in Discovery Park, but Sacramento County announced Friday the park would be closed ahead of a large event, The Sacramento Bee reported.
“We’ve become aware of (a large gathering) for the park on this day, which is against the current public health order. In an effort to protect public safety and health, we will be closing the park,” the Sacramento Regional Parks Department said on Twitter.
The Twitter post did not identify what event was scheduled for that day and department officials were not available for clarification.
After the announcement of the park’s closing, the event for Clark was moved to Cesar E. Chavez Plaza at 10th and I streets. It begins at 6 p.m.
“Join us tomorrow for the 2nd annual #stephonclarkday an evening full of commemorating life and legacy in a positive light!” according to a poster for the event.
Monday marks what would’ve been Clark’s 25th birthday.
