Suspect in Elk Grove college student’s shooting death arrested, facing multiple charges
A 60-year-old man is facing multiple felony charges including murder after being arrested by Berkeley police in connection to the June death of Seth Smith, an Elk Grove native UC Berkeley student.
Tony Walker was arrested around 1:20 p.m. Thursday after an officer spotted him, according to Berkeley Police Department arrest logs. Walker is being held without bail in Alameda County Jail and faces charges of first-degree murder, possession of a firearm by a felon and probation violation. Walker’s booking listed him as a member of a carpenter’s union.
Smith, 19, a graduate of Cosumnes Oaks High School in Elk Grove, was shot and killed while walking a Berkeley street late at night. He was not robbed and was found by a passerby who called the police.
Authorities offered a $50,000 reward for information relating to the crime leading to the arrest and conviction of the perpetrators, in a June 18 news release. It’s not clear if a tip led to the arrest.
