Teen arrested, accused of fatally shooting man intervening in fight, Yuba Sheriff says
Authorities arrested a teenage boy on suspicion of homicide Tuesday in connection with a deadly shooting Monday night in Olivehurst.
Deputies responded about 11:15 p.m. Monday to reports of a shooting in the 5500 block of South Gledhill Avenue, the Yuba County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.
An Olivehurst man, identified by the Sheriff and Coroner’s Office as 57-year-old Lonnie Long Jr., died of gunshot injuries at a hospital, according to the news release.
Detectives learned from witnesses that Long reportedly went outside to intervene in a fight that had broken out among teenagers outside his home. He was then shot, sheriff’s officials said, and the juveniles fled the scene.
The Sheriff’s Office says deputies determined the suspect to be a 16-year-old boy from Linda, whom detectives located Tuesday morning. The teen was detained and questioned, then arrested and booked into juvenile hall on suspicion of homicide.
The investigation remains ongoing, the Yuba County Sheriff’s Office says. The suspect is not being identified because he is a minor.
